4 tips before you hit the shops this holiday season
Shopper extraordinaire Aubrey Daquinag, of The Love Assembly, gives her tips on how to survive the last-minute Christmas shopping rush.
1. Start now
There’s no harm in having everything in order before December hits: save yourself the stress by starting earlier in the year and slowly making purchases. When you’re out shopping, keep your eye out for any items that’d make a great gift, as there will already be sales and special promotions happening for you to make the most of. If you decide to put buying an item on hold, snap a photo and make reminders to purchase it later.
2. Prepare a list and plan
You know what they say – if you fail to prepare then prepare to fail. Get organised with a detailed list starting with names of who you’ll be buying gifts for, exact features of the items such as colour, size and any specifications, your budget and where to purchase it from. That way, when you’re ready to start buying – whether it be online or in the shopping centre – you’ll know exactly what you’re looking for and where to get it.
3. Shop online
This is my favourite way to survive the last-minute shopping rush, because it saves so much time! Slot in ‘Christmas shopping time’ strategically throughout your days such as your morning and/or afternoon commute or lunch break. Get through your prepared list and compare prices before checking out of your online cart. Make sure to also take note of any special promotions for shipping, gift-wrapping costs and Christmas delivery cut-off dates to be sure you receive your items on time.
4. Get creative
Sometimes we can get so caught up with the materialistic side of Christmas that we forget about the gift of giving. If you’re a little cash-strapped, get creative with some DIY. Print some personal photos or try your hand at creative writing, or put together fun, self-designed cards or gifts with a twist, like ‘free 15-minute massage’. It’s the thought that counts, after all.
