Quick guide to styling a beautiful festive table

A beautifully designed table setting is key to making your Christmas dinner a special one. Designers and stars of The Block, Charlotte Ekas and Josh Terrett, give us their tips on how to tastefully style your table on a budget.

Show your family you appreciate them by making this Christmas an extra special one. It’s easy to achieve with some thoughtful styling. Here are our tips.

1. Choose a colour scheme.

Too many colours can look a bit of a mess (leave the drama to your Christmas tree). For your table, select one or two colours, focusing on silver, white, green or red.

2. Remember it’s Christmas.

At all other times of the year it can be tacky to go over the top with a theme, but we say Christmas is an exception! Decorate your table with holly, pine cones and baubles, just remember to stick to the colour scheme. We like to spray pine cones silver and use them as a centrepiece.

3. Mix modern and traditional.

It’s time to get out the good silver and fine china. A styled table looks great when you mix these classic pieces with some new features, such as homemade place cards or rustic placemats.

4. Stay homemade.

Christmas comes but once a year, so it’s always appreciated when people make an extra-special effort. Putting aside some time to get crafty has the added bonus of being more affordable. Every year with our niece and nephews we make homemade bonbons, filling decorated toilet rolls with lollies. Not only do the bonbons taste great – and keep the younger guests occupied – but it’s a wonderful tradition.

The most important thing to remember is to enjoy the decorating process. Just make sure there is space left on the table for that delicious Christmas feast!
